Been awhile since I reported on what real value there is in being #1 for a search over at Google, but the report just released this past week from the folks over at Chitika Insights is pretty darn accurate, eh!
But what about the thought that this study – like all too many online marketing whitepapers, might be “not so true?” I’ve written before on the Chitika network and most readers will remember that I do like same. It’s numbers and % reports jive so very well with what my own network shows that I just nod in agreement….having found the same angles and slants as they report…and it’s been 3 years since I reported on same.
Only so much time in a week, it appears and I’ve about run out of same! But not to worry, dear readers….here’s some “odd’s ‘n ends” that I’ve gathered up over the past week or so, that are cool, surprising and most of all, show potential for all of us involved in the digital arena, eh!
First up, is a great short but sweet infographic that I found from the folks over at Bazaarvoice, and as you’ll note if you clicked, that it’s on a channel that I’ve been watching over now for more than a year – the growing use of Tablets as a part of our digital day-to-day process. Cool eh…nice to see the growing trends as users adopt same.
Our regular readers here will know, that I very much enjoy/follow/put-up-on-a-pedestal the folks over at Chitika and their research into the search world, using their own index of millions of pages. (disclaimer – we do no biz with Chitika, nor do we have any mutual clients etc. etc. – I just like their research is all!)
Chitika, for those of you who may be newbies to same, is a data analytics company in the business of on-line advertising – “…through the application of data and innovative technology in the fields of mobile, local and search Chitika has developed a vast global network that maximizes yield for both publishers and advertisers…” is how they identify themselves and once again, I’m beholding to them!
Seems to me, that there may be something here & here, fresh from Chitika, to consider if you’re an SEO practitioner who works with E-Commerce sites, client sites, association/member sites….all sites in fact – and that something is just like I’ve always thought – Windows rules!
If you think about it at all, you’d have to come to the realization that the keywords that you target are VERY important to your rankings, to your prospective customers or clients and most importantly, to develop new revenue streams. Keyword research then is just about the basic foundation for any SEO Campaign and really it requires much thought, research, testing and then yes, even some VooDoo to get a handle on what works for you and your site!
It’s not easy. It’s not quick. It’s not fun. It’s not to be thought lightly of, either. It’s dang hard, long work to come up with say the top 25 or 100 or whatever number of keywords/phrases that will work for you and your site. What you’re doing, of course, is trying to sit in the seat of that prospective customer or client of yours, and use your best thoughtful work to come up with what they will use to find you.
What we all know about SEO Campaigns, is that if you optimize for anyone — it’s Go0gle, eh! That is about one of the most basic foundational aspects of understanding how an SEO Campaign needs to be developed…..Google is #1!
That said, and yes, this is a bit outside the norm I’d admit — the newly combined index/algo that runs both BING and Yahoo, is an opportunity waiting to be siezed and this was brought to our own attention from the folks over at Chitika!
Okay, I’ve got to tackle this one now. I’ve been an online user since 1988 (yup, pre graphics and Mosaic etc…all the way back to Lynx and text-based only browsing) and from what I’ve learned in my online professional life, almost anything can be spun when it comes to marketshare stats.
So, what’s prompted this?
Yup, news just in from Chitika Research….every single BING user is worth one and a half Googlers!
What do I mean — or rather — what do they mean by that?
“A new study by online ad network Chitika shows that an individual Bing user is worth one and a half individual Google users in value to website owners. The value of an individual user, in this case, is determined by their likelihood to click on a website’s revenue-generating call-to-action – in Chitika’s case, a text ad embedded in the site. Across the sample of nearly 15 million impressions used for this study, Google users clicked on ads at a rate of 1.09%, while Bing users clicked on ads 1.67% of the time…”
So, Chitika, the folks who do some pretty amazing research, have just published a new report, that shows that three word phrases work best for SEO!
That is, for any search engine statistical numerical comparison, three word phrases drive more traffic to a website than any other number of words in the search phrase! And that is very very encouraging for us SEO practitioners, eh! How’s that? Well, let’s take a look/see at their report numbers…
The simple answer, according to the latest Chitika Research study is — a ton! A FULL TWICE what the #2 ranking offers! In order to track same, the folks over at Chitika tracked their own traffic and it’s referrers and learned that almost 35% of that traffic came from the #1 ranking spot — almost as much as the numbers 2 through 5 slots combined, and more than the numbers 5 through 20 (the end of page 2) put together!
So….a #1 ranking brings new traffic, that’s not news, but the size of the lead of the #1 spot over all the rest is somewhat surprising, eh!
