You’re a small SMB owner – say you’re a lawyer who has just hung out your shingle or a locksmith working out of your first ever retail store or a Mom & Pop sandwich shop and you’re thinking that this online world may be the way to get you some new customers or clients. Good thought!
And you realize that there’s already other legal firms out there in your city or other locksmith shops or sandwich stores and that as the “new” kid in town, you’re going to have to compete with them. So your next thought would be you wonder how they’re “doing” in the online world. Second good thought!
And finally, you know that if you can figure out what “already in the market” competitors are doing, you can copy that strategy to get a foothold at least in the local search world. Great final thought…but…how can you find out who else is “on the field” that you’d be ccmpeting against?

Once again, David Mihm and about 40 of the top Local Search SEO experts (yup, I’m one of them!) combined to survey, develop, collaborate and then publish the annual 2014 Local Search Ranking Factors survey – and its’ out and it’s right here at moz.com!
Backstory is pretty easy….7 years ago, David Mihm and a few others worked on the survey by finding Local Search experts, asking them to “rank” what they thought were the topmost ranking factors to move your site up to the top in local search and it’s been a published gold mine of information for like 5 years or so. I’ve personally been one of those Local Search experts for 4 years and I can tell you, this is a very detailed, very focused survey.
I received just yesterday, the email mission that I’ve been a part of now for 4 years….yes, I got the call to help as one of the 2014 Local Search Ranking Factors study, originally created by David Mihm, now of moz.com – and I am once again delighted! And, worried too.
