Do You Use Long-Tail Keywords? You Should!
What are long-tail keywords and why might they be important to an SMB owner? Ah…some of the finest friends your website will ever have are “long-tails” when it comes to Google search results, so let’s get into it!
A long-tail keyword is – as Google itself reports here - “Long-tail keywords are longer and more specific keyword phrases that visitors are more likely to use when they’re closer to a point-of-purchase. They’re a little bit counter-intuitive, at first, but they can be hugely valuable if you know how to use them…”
Long-tail keywords are longer and more specific keyword phrases that visitors are more likely to use when they’re closer to a purchase decision. They’re a little bit counter-intuitive, at first, but they can be hugely valuable if you know how to use them…did you get that point…”closer to a purchase decision!”
Here’s an example…say you’re a furniture outlet, a bricks&mortar retail store. You have to realize that against the big big manufacturers and national furniture chains, you’re just never going to rank! There is too too much competition. You’re so so much smaller than they are and can’t compete. Except, say you carry Victorian furniture…then keywords like “Victorian influenced L-shaped couches” will work in that someone looking for that will want to search for that…and they will now come to your site!
Follow me here? Here’s how HubSpot puts it….and yes, if I’m quoting them, they gotta be right, eh!
“When you’re first getting started, you definitely will want to start by targeting long-tail keywords, because these are easier to rank for and they also bring in the most relevant and qualified traffic. In the graphic below, the plus sign shows the definition of each type of keyword, and the equals sign shows how that factors into traffic and rank…”
So…after a look at the chart above….do you see that the strength of long-tail keywords is “little competition” which is what we all want….course, add in the “low search volume” and yeah, we need a LOT of long-tail keywords to work for us to try to get back to some volumes that can bring you leads/prospectives that will convert and get you revenues….
