StartUp SEO: A List to Think On…
Okay, you’re startup is up and live…you’ve had the EUREKA moment and it got passed every single vetting moment by friends, family and your own peer group. You found a great company name, a matching domain name too, it’s up and live and yes, you’re ready for that all important traffic to start to drop by to be amazed…and to buy your online products or services.
You’re ready – but is your website itself would be the question – and from our own long-time SEO practice, what we know already is that the site is NOT ready at all.
So why do we think so?
Over the past 20 years or so, being involved here in our own community with the growth of our startup ecosystem, what we can honestly say is that every single startup lacked – and still lacks – a solid SEO Campaign for both strategy and tactical foundations.
Huh? Well, what we mean is that it’s not enough to have that great idea, and then get it up and live and running without thinking about the basic foundation of all business – you need customers and how to attract them. It’s really that simple and I’m always chuffed that so many founders agonize over color and fonts and A/B testing even – without thinking about how they’re going to attract those leads.
SEO is the answer. And SEO can be – for a startup at least – a simple set of basic building blocks to consider, and then to put into effect…so here’s our list for you new-to-SEO-founders to follow….and yes, DO Google for more info on every single term too, eh!
Content is King:
Google loves to match each and every search query with the best matching content it can find and simply put – the BEST content wins. So be the best content.
Links are Votes:
Google considers IBLs (incoming back links) like votes…the more/better/authoritative/trustworthy the link, the higher it will rank that content page.
Google for the best advice here – it’s basically, title, meta descriptions, H1s, image alts, keyword content text, footers etc….but DO different entries for every single page.
Use Google Webmaster Tools to ask for indexing/re-indexing, input your sitemaps, check your monthly queries etc as a daily GWT user. Do it so that you learn.
Nothing works better at establishing you as an authoritative expert in your channel that blogging about same often. Weekly at least. With great blog content will come IBLs too!
Learn what works here – play the game by using the various social medai sites to point new visitors to your content. It’s that simple and don’t forget Google+ too!
Setup a free Google Analytics account to track your visitors. But an SEO ranking software (I love RankTracker) to monitor your keywords and placements too. Remember, if you can’t measure, you’ll have no idea what is working….
It should be no surprise that a simple Google search for “SEO for startups” gets millions of hits…and there’s some real in-depth nuggets within the first few pages too. Dont’ miss Rand’s page here…or Maile Ohye of Google here….or SearchEngineJournal here….or the Huffington Post here…or even Mashable here.
All are spot-on point….and a gentle reminder….that without web traffic that EUREKA idea is well…toast!Google
