gritLIT_logoYes…it’s been a bit longer than I expected, but our local funding site, www.fundhamont.com now has it’s first ever community based Campaign – and I’d like to offer both a congratulatory KUDOs to gritLit as well as a ‘lets make this a real #HamOnt success story too!

So okay, what is “gritLit” might be the first question you have and here’s what their own website says about them –

History
gritLIT was established in November, 2004, by Hamilton writer and writing teacher Krista Foss. It started as a small, intimate festival, with readings taking place in the Staircase Theatre. Over the past seven years, gritLIT has evolved into a larger-scale and wider-reaching endeavor. It has spread out to encompass a number of venues including the Art Gallery of Hamilton, the Workers’ Arts and Heritage Centre, the Sky Dragon Centre, the Westside Concert Theatre, and, in previous years, the Dowtown Arts Centre and the Hamilton Conservatory for the Arts.

Since its inception, gritLIT has been associated with LiT LiVe, Hamilton’s monthly reading series. In recent years, we have also joined forces with Arts Hamilton and the Hamilton Poetry Centre.

Mandate
The goal of the festival is to engage the community in this country’s rich and diverse literary culture and to bring attention to local writers. gritLIT aims to make Hamilton, often thought of as a gritty city, a destination for book loving audiences as well as for authors from coast to coast. We will also attempt to bring other members of the Hamilton arts community together on the Saturday night of festival weekend in at least one scheduled interdisciplinary event…”

As you can see, it’s a real live group of writers/editors/publishers who look to their own community for the kind of support that only their own community can bring…and that’s what makes this first Campaign so important to us – and to the city itself.

What they need is to raise funds for their annual festival coming up in early April…so I’d like to challenge all of our Hamilton community….please drop by and make a donation to same….help build both our literary community and #HamOnt too!

So do drop by…click here to do that…and take a look at their Campaign. Yes, it’s still brand new and they’re going to be putting up more, much more information on the upcoming Festival….but if you want to read about that event right now, click here to see their very interesting workshops, and readings and the leadership in this area is truly a #HamOnt who’s who of literature too!
