The New York Times: When Blackberry Reigned!
I suppose that this was coming now for a few months, but I see that just a day or two ago, the famous New York Times newspaper published this excellent infographic on the life and times of the Canadian Blackberry fortunes and I thought I’d share it with you all today.
I’m sad. I did have a BB until a trip to San Francisco back in 2007 when I got the then-just-launched first iPhone…and have stayed in that iOS hardware camp since.
But, as always I as a loyal-to-this-Canuck-success-story of the RIM company outta Waterloo, watched and beamed as they rode one heck of a curve towards success – at least for a while that is.
Oh, I’ve had BB too…ove the past few years, a Torch, the Bold and yes even the PlayBook too…I still use that PlayBook on my coffee table at home to get emails forwarded and to read many only e-Magazine subscrptions too. I dont’ use it for much else tho…almost never taking it out of the house except I do use it to “time” the 5 minute demos at our own DemoCampHamilton series of events every quarter or so here in #HamOnt.
That said, this infographic is pretty particular in what it shows about the Blackberry and it’s climb – and fall – over the past 9 years. The NYTimes shows clearly not only the various stock levels and years but also populates the infographic with some great notes about users too including yes, the Queen of England and Brittany Spears too.
This however is sad. I’m so sad that the company did NOT continue to dominate the smartphone world. I’m so sad that it appears that Steve Jobs was smarter than both Balsillie and Lazaridis too. I’m so sad that they didn’t “see” the changes that were coming in the mobile marketplace…but most of all, I am so sad that such a meltdown “may” affect the whole city of Waterloo – our own Canuck Silicon Valley.
I hope it doesn’t, eh…we have so few Canadian startup success stories….I’m hoping that they “new” owners can once again get ahead of the curve and get the Blackberry back in more hands.
Yes…I’m going to go out and buy a z30 soon as it’s released….it’s the least I can do to try to help out, eh!Google
