Marketing: How to Learn What you Need to Know!

marketing101Startups of every type in every channel need to learn about marketing….what it is, why it’s important and most of all, how to “market” their products or services to gain revenues. Without revenues, you’re just burning up the company bank account and as we all know, there is a finite number of dollars you have to work with…so revenues matter big time!

Learning about marketing – from an online marketing POV then is an important asset that one needs to  be able to fulfill as soon as possible and as efficiently as possible too – and it’s to that point that today’s blog post deals with ‘help’ in that learning.

You could of course, go out and hire a new CMO and by doing so, bring that expertise in house and by doing so, control all the costs, goals and performance of all of your marketing programs all the time. And hiring an employee as a CMO would be at least say $50k or $4k per month let’s figure…so as you can see, this is not an inexpensive process.

When you think then on monthly burn rates, that $4k a month can be more than you can afford….yet you still DO NEED marketing….and the real costs of same can be lower…but you need to investigate all the various areas online to learn how to learn enough to do away with that $4k monthly burn rate. Or, you need to find a lesser monthly costs…and yes, there are some alternatives out there…and here’s my first suggestion (others to come in subsequent blog posts).

marketoFirst up for talented folks that can offer up selected items in one’s marketing tactical quiver that are well worth investigating – hence today’s post, and I wanted to begin with the folks over at Marketo.com who are billed as “designed by marketers for marketers!”

What Marketo does, is it supplys software for online firms to help those firms learn more, about everything from email, automation, inbound marketing and lead management via an online dashboard to nurture those leads as well as bringing them in too!

As well, they have a ton of whitepaper resources that one can download for free of course and learn from and increase one’s understanding at the same time. For instance, here’s the lead-in to a great free 100+ page whitepaper entitled “Definitive Guide to Marketing Automation” -

“This guide will help you do just that. We will help you answer key questions like:

  • What is marketing automation and how can it help my company?
  • Why is marketing automation so hot right now?
  • How does marketing automation differ from other technologies such as CRM and email marketing?
  • What are the common and advanced features of marketing automation tools?
  • How do I build a business case and convince internal stakeholders to act?
  • What does the future of marketing automation look like?

As you can see, I’m impressed with this type of content – sure, I get that they are using it to bring themselves leads for their automation software dashboard, but the quality is really really there. Download that whitepaper – and yes, investigate them all as they all are chock full of great tactics that from my own experience, only come with years of real “in the trenches” marketing wars. Sure there are plenty of others out there in this marketing channel but these guys are truly marketers first and foremost.

So give Marketo.com a look would be my best Monday morning advice, they were voted the #1 marketing automation software by Salesforce customers…so their appeal is universal I believe!
