It was last night and it was a total success, eh!

I loved it – for a whole bunch of reasons….not the least of which was that I got to “hob-nob” with some of our community’s true business leaders, drink some wine with them and yes, totally enjoy myself no end! But to recap same, here’s the “official” word from IF itself –

Hamilton, ON (April 10, 2013) – Last night over 300 people gathered at McMaster Innovation Park for The Big DiF, Innovation Factory’s (iF) annual celebration of Hamilton’s Innovation Community. During the celebration, iF presented the second annual Mark Chamberlain DiFizen of the Year Award, to Kevin Browne for his role in creating Software Hamilton, DemoCamp Hamilton, and Startup Drinks Hamilton and his leadership in bringing Startup Weekend to this city.

“A Regional Innovation Centre such as ours is only as strong as the ecosystem it inhabits,” said Keanin Loomis, COO at iF. “Kevin’s leadership behind Software Hamilton is helping build the grassroots, talent attraction and retention aspect of this growing and dynamic technology community. And he does it all without pay just because he loves this city so much and has seen too many of his fellow McMaster grads have to leave the city to find jobs.”

Currently a PhD candidate at McMaster University, Kevin attended Ancaster High School and is a die-hard Ti-Cat fan.

The Big DiF event was free for attendees, thanks to event sponsors McMaster University and McMaster Innovation Park. Speeches were given by David Carter (Innovation Factory), Zach Douglas (McMaster Innovation Park), Nick Markettos (McMaster University), Mark Chamberlain (iF Board Chair, President of Trivaris and former President and CEO of Wescam), and Ron Neuman, Executive Director, Innovation Factory. A light-hearted promotional video for Innovation Factory was also shown and can be found at www.thebigdif.ca.

The Big DiF highlighted the success of iF and the Innovation Community over the last year. In 2013, Innovation Factory has introduced the LiFT Program, to support Small and Medium Enterprises. iF also opened its Innovation Destination, which hosts various seminars, workshops and events, and also serves as a drop-in work area for the community, where people can have a meeting, grab a coffee, open up their laptop and collaborate with like-minded people. iF continues to have events throughout the year for the entire Innovation Community, including the Lunch ‘n Learn series (sponsored by KPMG), Innovation Night, LiON’S LAIR, and the newly introduced Webinar Wednesdays, Entrepreneurs Toolkit Series and Workshop Wednesdays. For a list of all Innovation Factory events, please visit innovationfactory.ca.

Since starting in November 2010, iF has engaged over 400 local innovators and start-up clients seeking to accelerate their businesses. Due to the ever increasing need for support, the iF team has grown to 13 staff members, and iF clients have created over 60 new jobs in Hamilton…”

As you can see…our own Kevin Browne won the 2013 Mark Chamberlain DiFizen of the Year award – just like I did last year…and I’m so so proud of him – and of our Innovation Factory in both recognizing him and rewarding him with this honor too!

More of that to come…but in the meantime, here’s the video that Dave Carter, CTO at Innovation Factory created and developed…and yes, that’s me in same too! Enjoy!
