BING & Yahoo Content Testing….
Yes, I know…with the huge size of Google at approximately 1 Billion searches a day….and more than 7+ Billion page views a day…it’s sort of hard to even think about those “other” search engines…yet I thought it again time to look at BING & Yahoo….but not for searches but for their inclusion of photos within their web search results.
First, you should already know that as Google has rolled out their AuthorShip program, whereby content can be attibuted to any Author that goes through their validation process, that Google now shows that Author’s photo along with the link to that URL where such content can be read.
This isn’t new, but has been “out” now for months and months…though to be honest many Authors do not know about same (great place to start to learn about same is here)!
But what about Yahoo, I thought first thing this morning….so off to yahoo.com I went and plugged in my own name [Jim Rudnick] and yes, up came the following web search results -
As you can see, the page shows a link via LinkedIN to my own LI profile – but the second result is from a much younger Jim Rudnick from Minnesota. Hmm…I thought….okay, it appears then that when it comes to the US version of the Yahoo dbase (via BING as you mostly know) then it “favours” the US Jim Rudnick, so that works for me too logically.
And for yahoo.ca I got the slightly different but as I noted more “canadian-ized” version of same and yes, I was identified ahead of my namesake from Minnesota…fitting I figure too! My own corporate site is listed first, then my own LinkedIN URL with my photo….again logically correct I figured too and here’s that screen shot too -
So….Yahoo appears to be using both a “geo” oriented algo to show photos for a search term….logical, and in the SEO world easy to work with too…this is good to know!
Moving over to BING however, proved to be somewhat disappointing to me….as here’s what I found. Using the same type of web results search at bing.com I again entered my name and here’s what I found to be the results for same -
As you can see, there are NO photos being used as yet within the BING web results pages…yes, there are Images shown…and yes my Yankee counterpart is #1….but not a single web result has a matching photo, though I am again listed as the #1 & #2 results…
So I figured that at the least, on BING.ca I’d show up – and here’s what I see -
As you can see….nope, not a single photo on any of the web result listings….sigh….
So…what have we learned from this testing session?
That in my opinion, while both BING & Yahoo do get millions of searches a day…without the added “oomph” of the photo that resides with the Google AuthorShip web results…their results look poor by comparison.
Here’s the Google web search again for my own name -
Dont’ you agree? I know that I do – and so do our Canadian SEO clients, eh!
