What The Heck Is SEO? A Rebuttal!
If you know anything at all about online marketing, the website smashingmagazine.com would be a spot that you’re already aware of…least in my world it’s one of the leading places for all things on marketing in various channels.
In a recent Opinion Piece, a writer by the name of Paul Boag wrote a piece entitled “The Inconvenient Truth about SEO” that he opened up with the following paragraph –
“Do you own a website? Do you want to be number one on Google? Whatever you do, don’t spend money on aggressive search engine optimization (SEO)…”
As you can tell, I’m going to NOT be okay with this…
But before I could mount (supposed to be off, eh?) any kind of a response, others stepped in to Rebut the claims made by this obviously not-an-SEO-practitioner….and I’m talking in this case about Bill Slawski and Will Critchlow…both exceptionally well known and respected SEO types on a global basis! Their own Rebuttal piece, entitled “What the Heck is SEO: A Rebuttal” can be found here and while they did the creation of same, they also used some of the globe’s best known SEO practitioners for extra wider-opinioned answers too!
They worked in conjunction with the Editors of SmashingMagazine too…and here’s how the Rebuttal piece was announced by same –
“This article is a collective reply of the active members of the SEO community to the article “The Inconvenient Truth About SEO” in which Paul Boag discusses the value of search engine optimization for website owners. Written and edited by Bill Slawski and Will Critchlow, this article explains what exactly “SEO” means today and discusses the common view many Web designers share about the work of SEO companies.—Ed…”
As you can see, it’s going to be a real hootenanny, eh! Well for me at least, it truly was….here’s my own take on the Rebuttal piece…
I too, just like Bill/Will was intrigued by the title, clicked the link and oh my god…the author of same begins with commenting on “keyword densitys” and “gateway pages!!!” Talk about being out of the loop for years and years…this was a bad sign…as I felt right off the bat that this writer knows NOTHING about SEO!
And as I noted, the response was the same for most of us real SEO practitioners…sigh…not a surprise at all!
In fact, Bill/Will went on to actually show what an SEO practitioner does do – not what we’ve not done for years…and that to me spelt out the simple fact that as I see things TOO TOO many SMB owners are not getting the SEO that they think they’re paying for….as many of the comments around the web as well as on the articles mentionned here show.
