Black Friday & Xmas Shopping RE-CAP: Amazing Numbers!
So…the past Friday, known at least here in North America as “Black Friday” the day after the celebration of the US Thanksgiving is now over and some of the numbers that were projected are “in” and what may be surprising is that a Friday can last all weekend, eh!
What do I mean? Well, first visit and pore over this great infographic from the folks over at strangeloopnetworks.com has visited this topic and has the following numbers to report…based on their own projections as well as industry stats it appears for both the Black Friday period and into the next month of Christmas shopping too.
First, the big number….it’s listed at $96 Billion dollars for the Black Friday to Xmas shopping period…and yes, that’s a “B” as in billion. That’s the total amount that will be spent online, i.e. using online shopping for their holiday shopping rather than in person store visits.
Thats a lot of money…12% more than what was spent last year and that’s not as surprising as it seems as the reasons that many more shoppers do their shopping online is relatively easy to understand.
Many want to avoid the in-store shopping that is just too crazy to enjoy is listed as the most basic reason and after fighting myself last year, I’d agree big time on that #1 reason. Plus, as I’m an online type, I find and save and then use online coupons….so online is growing at least in my own demographic, eh!
Other stats in the infographic are also very interesting….the fact that 1 in 5 or just more than 20% of all Xmas shopping will be done on a mobile device – a smartphone or a tablet is interesting, in that so many online ecommerce sites are not even ready for mobile screens etc. That to me is unusual…but obviously not enough to deter 1 in 5 shoppers.
Further in the infographic the authors list many more real nuggets of info, especially on things like shopping cart abandonement issues, slow sites and why 1 in 5 shoppers abandon their carts when those sites are slow!
