Negative SEO: Chapter Four Holds A Bit of Promise

Okie-dokie….you know by now about Negative SEO. You’ve read up on same all over the web, right? A simple google for same brings up almost 10,000 links to stories, blog posts, forums and the like explaining what it is and how it works.

And the fact, that yes…it’s truly something to think about. While I’m too chicken to actually google for “pay to have someone negatively SEO my competition” — okay, I lied…I just did that and got 2+million hits…sigh..what it means is that yes, your site can be negatively affected by a competitor or their SEO firm. That’s true. You should know that.

But why do I bring up all this “bad news?”

Well the answer is, that it now appears that yes, while a competitor can attempt to “take you down” somewhat in the rankings, it also appears that there are some defences out there that can both hinder – and maybe even halt such a “below-the-belt” attack, eh! And while we await the soon-to-come Google DisAvow too, here’s some of what I’ve found on same…

First a short reminder….that we posted on Negative SEO being “born” here….then followed that up with Chapter Two on same here and it’s inklings of help…and then Chapter Three here... and a google once again will bring up much more on same…

But for this Chapter Four post and the news that there may be some “hindrances” that can be used…I’ve been searching the web daily for that news…and so far, it appears to be thin at best….

What I liked was back in June….this video over at the Google YouTube channel…where Matt says “…in a month or two or three…” as the expected date for the launch of the Google DisAvow tool whereby a site owner can simply list links that they do NOT want to reflect back on their site (i.e. breaking any negative values) for whatever reason.

But as I said, that was now about 3 months ago and another search on the GWT forums shows that there as of today is still no word on the delivery of that tool…as yet. The fact that  less than a month later, BING brought out same…hurt’s my sense of “hey, aint’ Google always ahead of BING” thingy…but even so…there appears to be some discussion on same too, find that here… but like most folks, I so so seldom “work” my BING tools….it’s from Vanessa Fox – a well known SEO expert too….having worked for Google and she created the GWC too….so her, I do believe.

That ALL said…what to do? Hmm…if you’re like me (and every single one of our clients!!) you’re not in a “fix” over either Panda or Penguin, you’ve always been white hat so the tales of negative SEO are only bothersome. Traffics constant, conversions too….so you’re most likely not affected….

Doesn’t mean it can’t happen, mind you…so the list below for later reading gives some more perspective on how to “hinder” any negative SEO should you suddenly find your sites affected….Canadian SEO firms we talk to daily so far are testing other processsess and procedures…and we’ll report on them soon as we can validate our hypothesis on combatant elements.

And like the rest of the world, we await the new Google DisAvow tool…..
