DOH!: I Missed a Pitch Chance!
Okay, if you realize that I’ve pitched before to Angels, VCs and in competitions and you know that just last Thursday here in #HamOnt, our Lion’s Lair 2012 Pitch Competition was taped, then maybe you know what’s coming.
That I killed it, I aced it….would be how I felt I did for our Snappay mobile POS app Pitch…but it came to me yesterday, that I missed one chance that I had – and it slipped away!
Nevermind that my time was a bit “tigher” than I’d realized it’d be….I went off on a tanget or two would be the most correct way to say that I ran somewhat “long” for our timed pitch.
And nevermind that the 5 Lion’s I faced all have business experience, entrepreneurship experience and pitch experience of their own. Nevermind that we Top Ten Finalists had been mentored by our Innovation Factory team to work on not only the pitch – but on the questions that might come up and how you’d use them to further your entry.
Nevermind all of that.
What happened was at the very end of my pitch…the very last question from Dr. Nick Bontis and it was something like “so how do you see the future of your Snappay product occurring…” – or something quite similar to that intent…i.e. what did I think would happen in the future?
And I gave my practiced standard answer to same….that I believed that as Snappay grew, as we gained more B2C users and took more of a slice of the mobile POS payments pie, that we would continue to grow. With time so tight, I didn’t add in anything about our B2B strategy getting us so much bigger that much quicker either….and I closed with a smile….time was up.
But then Dr. Nick surprised me…he offered up an opinion. He said quite plainly, that he thought that Snappay would simply be “bought up” by a larger US competitor when they finally decided to come to Canada…i.e. our exit was a sale and soon.
My mistake? I agreed with him simply and said “yes, we see that too…” and I left it at that!
I missed a solid marketing chance right then to add that while Dr. Nick was correct – but that should we actually win the Lion’s Lair and our request for cash, legals and social media campaign, that this would enable us to gather more of that mobile POS payments pie…..and by doing so, increase our “exit” price to any US competitor.
I missed the chance to make Snappay the “poster boy” of the Lion’s Lair 2012 Contest…missed it. Didn’t think of it – though thru the actual Pitch itself, I did mention that a couple of times….but missed the chance that the last thing I would say would be a final request to win!!!
Sigh….it was a true mistake on my part…but I’m hoping that my Pitch itself was enought to make the Lions all “buy-in” to the Snappay mobile POS app….and by doing so, we might actually do well!
Don’t know. Won’t know till Oct 4th…but hope as always, springs eternal, eh! I just have to remember not to miss another chance like that ever again!Google
