Negative SEO: Chapter Three Deepens the Twists!
Okay….you most likely have already read our initial Negative SEO blog piece here or our follow-up a few days later entitled “Chapter Two” here….but as the title of this piece says, the twists that are beginning to come to the surface about Negative SEO deepen…
And as you’ll see by our blog piece here below…the “fallout” of what all of us SEO types and SMB owners are worrying about are now even more defined and “up in the air” at the same time.
Do we “listen” to what appears to be correct, or not….do we “follow” what Google’s spokesperson, Matt Cutts has to say about same or not….sigh….this can be more than nerve wracking for those of us who depend upon search engine traffic coming from Google who may have suddenly noticed a drop-off in numbers.
Here’s what I mean by way of a bit of backstory….our initial piece showed that Negative SEO exists…as backed up by a tested and tried set of empirical facts from the folks over at www.tastyplacement.com and that study can be found here.
The “weapon” that they used were simply “junk links,” posted via profile links, blog comment links and trashy sidebar links. These are the ubiquitous items that exist all over the web and they are used indiscriminantly by too too many SMBs to try to “push” their site up in the serps rather than building solid relevant content to “pull” great links to their site. Sad..but true!
Notes at the end of that Chapter One piece, offered up Barry Schwartz’s take on same over at his SEORoundTable blog as well as Google’s position “somewhat” from John Mueller who recommended 404’ing the page till the real live Google “disavow” tool is up and live.
Hmm…okay, so we know now that Negative SEO exists, and there is a bit of help in trying to get “out from under” a Negative SEO Campaign that your competitor may have launched against your site. But as we found out a few days later, in this Canadian SEO piece here on our blog, that more SEO types had answered their own queries on same and I gave up three great sites to look at to learn how to monitor and yes, how to try to prevent such an attack. Most of the folks who contacted us with thanks on same, said that they too couldn’t wait until Google actually made their new “disavow” tool live…and we still await that today.
But…in the meantime, it appears that Google has just launched a brand-new set of Link Warnings…the email was sent out it appears just yesterday, and the SEO expert Danny Sullivan wrote about it here….and basically, it shows you what and where Google “is” on these same Negative SEO bad incoming links….with Matt Cutts weighing in on same too!
We monitor same and bad IBL’s can hurt you. Wait…no you can ignore our warnings. Wait…maybe you should pay attention. Wait….wait…wait….sigh!
Read Danny’s piece. Then try Bruce Clays blog piece here, then Alex Graves piece here, and finally a recap of same from Barry Schwartz can be found here - then simply Google for more. It will appear that these “Negative SEO bad link warnings” just may come to you in an email…but as you will read, you can ignore them!
Or can you? Do you trust that as Matt says, you can simply “ignore” these warnings? Do you?
