#LionsLair2012: Our Elevator Pitch Strategy
Most likely you already know what an “Elevator Pitch” is – that supposedly, it’s a short very to-the-point pitch that you give to an investor prospect in less than a minute….say the same amount of time it’d take to ride up to an office in a downtown skyscraper.
Least, that’s the thinking and what you can find all over the web….but I think – and hopefully can make the case here, that in reality an Elevator Pitch is “it!” It’s the single most important piece of early marketing that any startup founder can use to try to get interest and momentum in their new company!
First, a set of great examples, I think, would be of use…..in trying to get you to understand just how very very important an Elevator Pitch can be would be a good place to start. Found over at youtube.com, are these a few that really show the various best practices that one can find in use to develop an Elevator Pitch that should be the model you strive to create for your own firm.
Josh Light, a startup entrepreneur from the US shows one of the best pitches I’ve ever seen – go here to view this great pitch! And for a fun look at how else you can craft an Elevator Pitch using humour and great production values, go here to see Mike Dubin of dollarshaveclub.com and how he used his minute or so to try to get you interested in his firm – and to even place an order for his product too! Sean Wise was one of the founders of our national TV hit “Dragon’s Den” and here’s his own take on what an Elevator Pitch can be…..I love this piece!
And lastly, one of the best pubic speakers on startup – Guy Kawasaki – has this great piece here on the Art of making a Pitch! Do try that link….Guy is great!
Okay, so if an Elevator Pitch is so important, and if I remember that Guy said that the real purpose of the pitch is “to get to the next stage” and as a finalist in our #HamOnt Lion’s Lair 2012, I know all about that too!
We’ve been working hard – very hard on our own Elevator Pitch…to try to get it down to 60 seconds of spot-on marketing copy that makes any listener want – need – to hear more. We know the “next stage” is coming…the full 15 minute presentation in person to our Lions in August…but this one minute Elevator Pitch is for the media, to be posted online and to try to get us some real traction and “oomph” with the local startup community….and we know that only too well!
And for a look at the complete list of us top ten Lion’s Lair 2012 finalists, click here to see the page with a short bio of our firms….to be further populated with our Elevator Pitches too once they’re taped and published this week.
Editing and memorizing the new copy and it’s flow…then validating each and every single word for full effect….revising….thinking on meanings and semantics….then re-editing and re-memorizing….the process can be long and even somewhat disheartening. But of value. Big value. A successfully crafted, finely tuned Elevator Pitch gets immediate traction and starts up the momentum that every single startup founder wants to create for his new firm.
Lastly, a note….that we tape these for public consumption in the media this coming Wednesday….48 hours in fact till I’ve got to have it letter perfect and compelling. Tune in later in the week, to see how we did, eh! Hopefully, you’ll love our pitch!Google
