InnovationFactory: Lunch ‘n Learn on Employment Law
Going to a Lunch ‘n Learn put on by the Innovation Factory is one of the best ways I know to gain valuable insight into areas that many entrepreneurs just do not know enough about. And yesterday’s session on Employment Law was a great success!
Wait, you say….a Lunch ‘n Learn on legal stuff and it wasn’t boring? No, actually while that may be what many attendees might have expected, it wasn’t the experience that I got…in fact, the content was great!
And let me explain first, the duo of experts that led this session and why that meant a difference.
Acting as the Innovation Factory host, was Peter Smith, one of the EIRs (Executive in Residence) a well known and is a seasoned software and services executive with over 30 years of extensive global experience that includes a track record of managing organizational change, resulting in growth and increased profitability in the technology industry. His experience includes senior roles at IBM, PeopleSoft and Information Resources. Pete is currently Managing Partner of The Meaford Group and a Corporate Director of CSDC Systems, gShiftlabs and Headcount Corp. I couldn’t imagine someone better able to lead this discussion, eh — and I and the crowd of almost 100 eager SMB owners and startup entrepreneurs were happy campers!
The other “half” of the Employment Law was, yup…a lawyer, Rob Salisbury, who is a partner at Gowlings, where his practice consists of guiding local, national and international companies to balance management needs and concerns with fair and sustainable employment practices. Rob has extensive experience representing employers on matters relating to employment contracts, wrongful dismissal actions, fiduciary obligations and contractual restrictions affecting employment relationships, all of which were forefront in my own mind as he spoke on what I thought would be a pretty dry subject. Yet as this Lunch ‘n Learn was presented using a method I’d not seen used before, both myself and the rest of the room very much enjoyed both the back-and-forth between Peter and Rob and especially the anecdotal stories and scenarios that were presented a-plenty! They call this kind of event a “Lunch ‘n Learn,”…so did I learn something?
Yes, I did and judging by the number of questions from the attendees, from the lineup after the event was over of further followup and collateral questions and from the nodding in the room as point after point was made – IMHO we all learned something. In spades! And the last third of the slide deck was chock full of great typical questions all SMB owners or entrepreneurs would have asked….and we got the skinny on them too!
Update: This was the year’s last Innovation Factory Lunch ‘n Learn & we also learned today that they will restart in the new year with a brand new sponsor too, KPMG – who will be aiding our Innovation Factory and as a great tip, you should really consider getting down to the MIPs Centre for the upcoming series which begins early in 2012! I know I will….they say you’re never too old to learn, and judging by the quality of the ones I attended this year, I’ll be there for sure, eh!Google
