DemoCampHamilton3: A Booming Success!
Okay, by now, you’ll know that I love start-ups, I love my community and yes I have a soft spot for my alma mater McMaster and it’s generation of brand new brains that enter our community with a penchant for both business and hi-tech….so it should be no surprise that our latest DemoCampHamilton3 was a booming success, eh!
Held just last Wednesday, September 28th at the 1280Pub at McMaster, there were almost 200 attendants for what can only be described as a growing turnout for both our educational and business communitys….and I was proud to see that many enthused folks all in one room!
Our KeyNote Address, came from David Crow - yes, the David Crow who was the original founder of the whole “DemoCamp” movement more than 6 years ago. The David Crow who has a solid past in start-ups, in hi-tech, in blogging and yes, in investing in what he calls the “start-up north” community! David provided a full 45+ minutes of opening comments for us – and a single slide presi that captured what he’s learned about “building a community” that as I watched, made many heads present nod in agreement. This man knows “community” and is more than willing to challenge thinking on same…<big grin here>…and his comments and editorial asides to our front row attendants was both spot-on and so funny that we all laughed right out loud especially at his gauge of silicon valley and what that means to us Canucks! BIG #Kudos here, David….your whole energy made the night for us! Incidentially, I got the privilege of Introducing David…so I needed some background….and when you google his name, you’ll get as I did over 20 million hits on that name! Finding the correct David wasn’t tough…but when you start to read about his background, the depth of his knowledge and past successes…well, for me it was difficult to try to stay at less than 1 minute for the intro! Sure there’ve been ups & downs…but then as any biz founder knows, that’s par for the course! So another big congrats here David, we all enjoyed your personal “take” on our state of start-up affairs up here in Canuckland…
And then, there were the actual DemoCamp presenters…and we had a great troup of same!
Jennifer from Verdant Analysis presented her financial analysis software – and for those of us who sometimes toil – and I mean sweat and effort here – over financial spreadsheets and attempt to find methods and techniques to short-cut the time consuming accounting work, then this app could match your needs perfectly! This start-up was one of our Lion’s Lair contest top 10 Finalists and made an impact I can tell you on a pub full of Mac students all very much involved in this kind of financial managment tool “needers” eh! Well done Jennifer!
FluidMedia presented it’s “SkinnyBoard” web app, an application that allows developers to use agile project teams/managers/coders keep all their “ducks in a row” and show efficiency and collaborate and they offered up a free trial too! Great app, and I too will look at how I can get same on board for upcoming projects too!
OpenHamilton bills itself as a simple group of concerned Hamiltonians, who are attempting to get local data “open” so that it can be used to help citizens “find” areas that they might need to refer to, to better their Hamilton lives. This demo as shown was pretty amazing….and it made me think (as it’s supposed to I figure) of other ways that specific data, if opened up to our use, might also help better this community….nice one here lads!
Brad Ross and Mike Saniga, co-founders of Quant Interpretations were up next and I think that this demo, the third one of theirs that I’ve seen, made the best impact of the night on me…. It showed me the true “reach” of their statistical depth and I can see, that as an SEO practitioner, I just may have some needs that their software can help when it comes to consulting to clients on their market research! This project was also a part of our top 10 finalists in the Lion’s Lair competition so I’ve been able to watch as their SaaS product has been developed and am proud to say that Brad and Mike have really come along, pitch wise, and that I see only great success in their future! Well done lads!
Alex & Ruxandra Bucataru are the co-founders of Enthuzr, a new start-up app, just in BETA, that offers that it can help you “Upgrade Customer Acquisition and Retention
at every stage of your business…” – a great claim and after watching Alex demo same, he’s made a believe out of me, eh! A simple click on their link, will show you the list of features that make this app a winner – activate your users – accelerate customer acquisition – boost customer loyalty are all targets for this SaaS app and I joined the BETA awhile back and am looking forward to knowing – learning – enjoying more for my own biz — and so should you! Nice nice idea here, Alex & Rux…and well demo’d too!
HomeFinder by factor (e), is a site that like many others turns the chore of finding a home into an easier set of tasks….and as demo’d, might just prove to be a real contender in the highly competitive realtor channel! The app was demo’d well, and showed that it was backed by what I’d readily admit as great technology! And yes, I used it later on, to look over properties that exist up here in Waterdown and yeah, I did find it very easy to use and judging by my own values, this too is a contender! So again, well done factor (e) folks….very nice app, eh!
One more note too…that I’d just like to add that as a guy who is very much willing to admit that the whole DemoCampHamilton initiative is a long, lengthy and task filled job – that I wanted to once again, acknowledge the leadership of Kevin Browne….a PhD candidate student at McMaster who has had the vision and passion to drive us to where we all are now! His leadership is solid and I will be just behind him, trying to help foster a great new ambition for our community – one of start-ups and a passion for business! So come along, won’t you? He will need help along the way and all you need to do is to offer up the willingness to aid our community to grow….see you all at our next start-up community building event – StartUpDrinks Hamilton!
Update: Just got the single presi sheet from David…click here to view same!
