Online Canucks: A Plugged In Country, eh!

Yup, the title about says it all….as a nation, we Canucks are about as plugged in as you can get! Don’t know if it’s our long long winters or our cheap hydro power, but for whatever reason, we Canucks love being online!

First, the report that shows just how much growth our .ca registry has enjoyed, when compared to other national (ccTLD) registries is out and it was compiled by the folks over at SIDN, the Netherlands (.nl) registry and the numbers are interesting to say the least. In the free PDF report, there is a chart that shows the world’s top 25 internet country codes and their growth….and yup, Canada is #1 on the list for growth for country codes! Us Canucks rule, eh!

Sure, there’s reasons for that…and I’d guess that a large part of that falls at the feet of our own CIRA organization, with all the recent updates and “love” that they’ve added to managing your .ca accounts. That, and as can be seen in the chart, that as some country codes are levelling off…our .ca is still ramping up! So KUDOS CIRA!

More help of course was provided by the Canuck consortium that put together the whole GYBO program, which we wrote about here - and updated here with stats and I’ve just been told by my Google contact that there are now 7,000 new domains as a part of this program with 6,000 new websites too! You can find out much more information here at  their own site and get a FREE – yes, I said FREE – .ca domain and site! So again KUDOS, GYBO!

NewAd is a Toronto based agency that is really into marketing and communications and advertising…and they’ve just published another report on us Canucks, with an angle on social web use by Canadians aged 18 to 34. And guess what? No surprise really as all you need to do is to look around you at a restaurnt, on a bus, at the hockey rink….and where are all the faces pointed? Yup, down at the hand-held smartphone and the reports is quite clear on the results of almost 3k worth of respondents…that  they spend the equivalent of 29.9 days per year on social media, which is approximately 8.2% of their life. That’s nearly one month a year, spent on the phone….texting and socializing and engaging with their “peeps!” Not surprising, as I said earlier but there are some interesting stats within this report on Facebook and Twitter usage…and you should pop by to read same.

So, bottom line is especially for our Canadian SEO practice? We Canucks sure love our online time….and as our .ca (ccTLD) grows stronger I suspect that at some point in the future….actually “seeing” a person face-to-face will become less and less the normal way of “being” a Canuck…what do you think?

This is proof that our .CA extension is growing and becoming mainstream for Canadian Businesses. Keep an eye out on .CA vs .US, we are about to surpass our neighbours to the south this week.
