LocalBiz: A Review of My Own YELP Account…

Okay, so by now you all know what YELP is, what it does and how you can use it for SEO Campaigns….least by now you should know that, eh! But that’s actually not the thrust of this blog post – what I want to talk about is what I see as the real value to Social Media that YELP brings to the table. And the best way I can think of to do that, is to use my own experience and account with YELP to show what I’ve learned.

First, I’ve only been a “member” at Yelp.ca now for about 6 months….having thought at about mid-fall last year, that yes, I needed to join and start making my own reviews as a necessary part of being “social” and trying to let others know what I thought of our local biz scene. As you can see by the image insert here, I’ve made a total of 26 reviews in that 6 months and have updated only 5 of same…usually in response to a comment made by another Yelp visitor who either liked or didn’t like what I had to say.

Further, you will also note that I have made “20 Firsts” or in non-Yelpanese, I’ve reviewed a local biz for the first time at Yelp.ca by listing their biz first and then making my own review for same. Any Yelp member of course can do that and I’m sure there’s like tens of thousands who’ve gone tons more of these Firsts than I do…but for me, I think that it was then and remains important still that if I wish to review a local biz, that I be able to enter their biz into the Yelp index.

You’ll also note that I’ve got 3 QuickTips which are short little review quips that you enter from your iPhone — and in my case they were all done about a local biz I was sitting in or at,  at the time – one positive for the Bean Bar in Westdale, one saying that the local BIA had some great stores and one negative for a restaurant that I was totally not in favour of ever going to again (no name here either…just a really bad experience!).

Re: my reviews, tho….the 26 times that I’ve taken the time  to write a review on a local business…yup, I know what you’re thinking. That I’d only take the time to write a negative review and post it after having a bad experience with a local biz…and here’s the chart that Yelp provides to show my own star reviews —

As you can see, I’ve got 17  5Star reviews…i.e. positive reviews about local businesses that I have enjoyed frequenting as a customer. I have 1 4Star review, 1 2Star review and yes, 7 1Star reviews i.e. they’re the worst that I could rank them….as Yelp does not allow you to rank a local biz as a ZERO Star review….something you do see commented on often in the review listings.

Why those 7 you might ask? Well for me, what I think made me think that the time to login to Yelp, write a 1 Star review and then post same to my account, was worth it, was predicated on the simple fact that these businesses should not even be in business. Sure, I know that in some cases (maybe by 1 2 Star review for example) something else might have factored into that bad experience, but on the whole, after you’ve been a consumer as long as I have, you learn that businesses have all types and styles and competantcy levels when it comes to customer service…and as my own rankings show, I think that this overall 26% bad rankings is about normal, at least in my own business community.

And yes, everyone’s Yelp account also lets you show “other” charts too; I like especially the one that shows the various categories that I’ve reviewed in like this pie chart….

But back to those 7 1Star rankings and yes, my own high levels did get me thinking about what the overall Yelp ranking percentages might be…..and here’s their own pie chart on same, eh —

As you can see, they have only an 8% 1Star ranking….which leads me to either the conclusion that we have many many more poor customer service businesses here than anywhere else in Yelp.ca land…or that my own “needs” when it comes to what I expect from a local business are higher than anywhere else in Canada.

What do you think and how would you rate your own “needs” when it comes to local businesses and their levels of service?
