SEO for Windows: AdClick CTR Numbers are In!
Seems to me, that there may be something here & here, fresh from Chitika, to consider if you’re an SEO practitioner who works with E-Commerce sites, client sites, association/member sites….all sites in fact — and that something is just like I’ve always thought – Windows rules!
We looked through our stats and just like they did, we noted that Windows still is the majority OS that visits — no real surprise there, eh! For us you can see the exact numbers by clicking on the above image, but they were as follows for thie blog over the past month…
- Windows had 7,143 visits for 82%
- Macintosh had 977 visits for 11%
- Linux had only 534 visits for 6%
Okay, so with those numbers mirroring I’d very much suggest to you, the same numbers that are global in usage, so what? Ahh…what what if Chitika and I agree too, that the BEST traffic for any site, is the one that brings in CLICKS….and that’s Windows O/S!
“Windows takes the cake with a CTR of 0.77% in this sample. The big driver of this appears to be people still using Windows XP – although it has a smaller CTR than ’95, ’98 or 2000, those operating systems drive so little traffic that it’s not really worth much to web publishers. XP is still the top-used operating system across the Chitika network, and with its relatively high clickthrough rate, it’s a publisher’s best friend…”
And the worst for CLICKS is the Mac O/S! That’s right, maybe that beautiful interface must somehow interfere with the Mac user’s ability to see something they want to buy, to learn about, to join, to comment on…whatever…..and they don’t click anywhere near as much! Linux users scored marginally ahead of those Apple folks, but not by much….here’s the bar chart on that too –
Okay, so that’s the CTR for the O/S visitors we get and I suspect that you too get…and the CTR for our clients is spot-on as well, eh! But what about browsers….is there a winner there too that you can SEO for? Yup, sure is…
And the winner is Internet Explorer! I have a big grin here, as it’s the same thing I see mirrored day in and day out for clients we have in all channels on a global basis, eh!
“You would expect, given this information, that Internet Explorer would be uncontested at the top of the ad-click mountain. After examining a sample of traffic across the Chitika network, we found that, if you expected that, you’d be right – IE is, indeed, the browser with the highest clickthrough rates. Surprisingly, Opera is in second place, well ahead of Firefox, Safari, and Chrome…”
And our numbers agree here with one small variation, I noted. That for us here at our Canadian SEO blog, we seem to have almost no Opera browser visits. I don’t know why, maybe because the folks who use same are “not” into SEO and specially into Canuck SEO…and here’s that barchart too —
Well as you can see, the AdClick CTR was 0.89% for IE, Opera next at 0.62% then FireFox at 0.50% then Safari at 0.45% and finally Chrome at 0.34%. IE was almost 3 times the volume that Chrome was and near double for FireFox. Amazing, eh?
What does it mean for us SEO types? Well, as I’ve been doing this computer thingy for over 30 years, what I have noticed – and what Chitika comments on too – is that the more custom apps that a user uses to surf the net, the less likely they are to be “in the pack” when it comes to CTRs, and that’s what you need to take away from this, eh!
Windows O/S and IE are still the default for website visitors; so SEO for them, write content for them, use call-to-actions that work for them…and you’d not be wrong!
Yes, Windows still rules….and that’s the only conclusion that I and Chitika can arrive at if you look at the analytics, eh! Does your mileage vary and if so, what do your analytics show, eh?Google
