DemoCampHamilton1: A Resounding Success, eh!
I am one very happy canuck today, because last night, I went to my city’s first ever DemoCampHamilton1 — and it was a resounding success for all that attended – and the cut-off was 100 folks due to the size of the venue! And we had to be past that number as everywhere I looked I saw folks talking chatting and using their smartphones all over the room at Slaintes Irish Pub! Congrats!
But that’s not all I want to say about this, what I need to do as a long time Hamiltonian and a very much ‘nerdy’ online marketing type of guy is to offer up kudos to a few folks…beginning with Kevin Browne, a student at McMaster University for his leadership, passion and drive in creating this whole new thrust into online business/startups/software! So congrats Kevin! Kevin is very much a new force here in town; he started and lead our whole new DemoCampHamilton and he runs and site here in town (http://www.ghcsn.org) with more’n 80+ members that you can read much more about here too! And he’s a PhD candidate student at McMaster…so while he’s really got a lot on his plate, I’d think that such a leader with that kind of passion deserves a “tip-o-the-hat” and that’s just what everyone else last night had to say too!
Further to that leadership, Kevin also had the time to court two very influential Hamilton sponsors for our new DemoCampHamilton start-up — FluidMedia and the Innovation Factory, where I know Ron Neumann the Executive Director there and he is as focused on making Hamilton a “player” when it comes to start-ups and innovation as anyone could be! Kudos Ron! And both sponsors nicely offered up some sponsored “refreshments” (cold beer!) and both did not take hardly any “time” out of the whole evening to blow their own horn! Instead the time was given to our Keynote Speaker and then there were 5 Demos presented too…
Ali Asaria of well.ca was the Keynote speaker, and after seeing his deck and listening to him, I can tell you this — well.ca is both well run, well thought of and Ali explained that it’s also very much into technology…with some surprises passed along about “live” production server changes and that they try to hire software folks who can really deal with both chaos and change…great Ali…and Kudos!
All the Demos last nite — the list is here — were fun to watch, think on and yes, even ask questions about too! My own fav was the one presented by the founder over at poolingpeople.ca, Hannah McKinnon which was to bring over and understaffed companies together to sort of “job share” employees….she recognized that there is a “pain” out there, that her startup has a solution and pitched same to us and surely was the “model” that most Angels/VCs look for….and her idea is scalable too! Well done Hannah!
What’s next for DemoCampHamilton?
I really don’t know — but I do know this, that ably led by Kevin and supported by Ron Neumann at Innovation Factory too….that there will be another. And then anohter and another….most likely on a monthly basis….at Slaintes and maybe up at Mohawk College or over at McMaster University…the venue isn’t the big deal….it’s the people that both lead and follow same that is the big deal! And yes, I’m sure (if I have to help myownself) that soon there’ll be a Facebook page, a LinkedIN page and even a Twitter account….all to come in the near future. For now, it’s early days….and I’m as I said, one happy canuck, eh!
So kudos to one and all for their involvement and leadership and passion….and I hope that others have noticed that our city is back, eh!
Update: Don’tcha just love how quick Google can find News…this took 12 minutes to hit the google.ca index and yup, this post is now #1 for “DemoCamp Hamilton” eh! Cool!Google
