SEO Marketing: Make a Call-to-Action!

Okay, this is so so so basic in Marketing 101, that I’m always a bit taken back by new clients, who have never learned that if you want business from website visitors, you need to ASK for it! Yup, that’s still one of the most necessary items in any website’s marketing strategy, the “call-to-action” must be present, eh! And what is same, you might ask…ah….lemmee explain!

A “call-to-action” is a button of any size, shape, color or design, that is there for the website visitor – your prospective new client/customer to click on, to begin the process of turning that “lead” into a new client/customer. It’s that easy and it’s that difficult all at the same time, and here’s why in a nutshell.

First, that call-to-action, needs to be of a basic type of request…it can be a simple “Add to cart” type of button to allow someone to earmark a website item as something that they want to buy or a “Buy Now” type button…ie a “transactional” call-to-action. This one is used pretty ubiquitously all over the web in sites to allow “easy” buying…could anything be more basic that to use same?

Or, it can be a simple “Click to download our Free Trial” type of button, to allow that prospective client/customer to download your software items, install them on their own desktop, use them for a certain period of time for free (sometimes of course, the feature set is limited to try to ensure that these trial-0nly customers will want/need to buy the product) and in doing so, prove to themselves that they “need” your software….or what we call the “free trial” call-to-action button.

Or, it can be say a “See our Plans & Pricing” type of call-to-action button or a “Sign Up Here” type of call-to-action, or a “Free Analysis” type of call-to-action button…there are many many more..but they all “do” the same thing. They try to make it easy — very easy — for the prospective website visitor to become a new client/customer of yours via that graphically pleasing button.

So, what’s “graphically pleasing” and how do you create same? Well, we keep a whole host of examples in various categories for our own clients…but there are many many sites on the web to find same…and some new ones include the following URLS, eh!

Of course, that’s not enough to ponder on as you now begin to think about design and layouts and fonts and color…color? Yes as you may or may not know, color itself is a major influence on website visitor “click” behaviours, eh! We know about same and have always tried to maintain best practices…but if you want to know more, here’s a great new infographic on same from the folks over at dailyinfographic.com….via kissmetrics.com, eh!

  1. Your SEO blog is very interesting. It seems to be a great idea of a Internet Marketing Strategy. Nice post ,very worth reading.

  2. Call to actions are extremely important to have on all pages of a website. After all, isn’t it conversions that you are looking for? As you mentioned, a clearly visible button works well to get a users attention.

@Nick….agreed here big time! And yes, I do wonder tho sometimes why so so so many SMB sites out there do not think that a “call-to-action” will help…hence, they do not appear on their sites.

Helps tho ( :-))) ) bigtime if these “non-marketing” types are in the same channel as our clients…makes the SEO Campaign just run that much better, eh!

Selfish perhaps….but hey, isn’t a successful SEO Campaign for a client what it’s all about!

    :-)

  5. Awesome that you provided resources as well as the advice. I would add, that once they have a call to action in place, they can also benefit from testing different calls to action or even completely different offer pages. Google Website Optimizer is a free, and very capable tool for just that.
