Search Engine Shoppers: 53% Use SmartPhones!
Okay, so the big holiday retail shopping period has just ended, your closet is full of items to return and you’re a’wondering if the folks who bought you that automatic garlic press actually “thought” about the gift before wrapping same, right? Well, Yahoo and the YAdvertising agency just completed a study on that and it appears that over 50% of gift givers used search engines to drill down on what to buy you & me & everyone else too, eh!
The question that they posed to over 2000 shoppers was this — “How are people who use search as part of their shopping process different from other shoppers?” and judging by the response, they were able to determine the following statistics from their survey…
- 50% of searchers source customer reviews and ratings online
- 43% of searchers visit shopping comparison websites to make an informed decision
- 37% of searchers visit coupon websites to check daily deals
- 25% of searchers check out a brand’s social media channels like Twitter and Facebook
- 53% use their mobile devices to help them research a purchase
The actual challenge as we all know, is to shop for that “perfect” gift for a loved one or client….and I’m talking about a little more thought and effort than visiting the Hickory Farms site to send over some salami (note, we’ve done that in the past and their top level baskets are really pretty good)….that is, once you get “by” whats easy and convenient…what else can you do to “find” that gift? And the answer of course, is to use a search engine to help….and as you can see from the graph below, over 50% of us did just that by looking for Reviews and past customer ratings on same….
A few less chose to use comparison sites to look over the various features/benefits and prices….still further few looked at their choices via a coupon site or visited the brand online at either Facebook or Twitter….but notice the last graphed item?
53% of us, used a mobile device to research and buy….and suddenly, a light-bulb goes off above your head! Hey….that’s maybe what that guy at BestBuy was looking up over at the iPad counter, or the woman at the BodyShop was reading about the new salamander body lotion or the teenager was nattering about over at HMV in the old Canadian rockers section…. Do you get that? That mobile, ie smartphones, were used by over half of the shoppers to research info on their purchases for your Xmas shopping presents.
You hear that?
That’s the sound of brand manufacturers calling their Marketing Dept’s to order some “online” Pull marketing campaigns to get ahead of the competition…least that’s what I hear, eh! YMMV of course…but judging by this survey, I’d be calling too!Google
