Google and the Knowledge of Man!

Okay, this has been noodling at me now for more’n a couple of years….the simple thought that Google does have ALL of mankind’s knowledge at it’s beck and call. Think about that for a second or a year…and if you’re like me, then maybe you’ll start nodding. And what do I mean by this thought? Like the image shown here, and the thought from this sign writer, is that Google does NOT have all the answers…and, I think I have to agree!

What do I mean, you ask, seeing as the sign writer obviously was talking about somekind of “religious” angle…i.e. that in his thoughts, Google does not know “all” about religion. And on that topic, I really can’t answer…I don’t think anyone knows “all” about religion….but surely with 290 million hits on ‘religion’ Google has a semblance of an idea.

But what about other things, like say leopard frogs, or zeitgeist foibles or Gordie Lightfoot or Canadian SEO? Tons of hits. Millions of hits….lotsa knowledge there, eh! How about finance, love, courage, anger, Martin Luther Day (yup, that’s today, eh!) or potash….again hundreds of millions of hits. And I suppose a real test of same, i.e. the thought that Google has acquired more knowledge than anyone or anything or anybody must eventually enter your conciousness. Got a question? Ask Google. Need information? Ask Google. Looking for opinions? Ask Google….if everything leads to Google, then they must have all the knowledge of mankind, right? But is that true?

But before you think about Google “having” all the knowledge of mankind….I think you need — as I did — to remeber that Google really has NO information at all….not even a bit of same. What Google has/is is just an idea, not the first ones to have same, nor the last either…

Google has an idex – ie a huge, gigantic list if you will, of places that anyone can go to learn more about all things it’s got on that list…but in fact Google itself has no data at all. It’s an empty shell that holds links “to” that information, but not the information itself. Google is NOT god….as the sign writer already knew!

Got that? I hope so…as it’s taken me more than a few years of getting “past” the thoughts that Google was/is/will be the final authoritative source when it comes to mankind’s knowledge. Simply put, they’re not.

What Google is then — is the list only of where you can go to find stuff…the list you search thru to find that stuff. They’re just the medium, and with apologies to Marshall McLuahan, in this case that “medium” is “not” the message at all, eh!

  1. Google seems to have a lot of pretty good ideas about who to present their ads to, where we have been surfing, who we have been emailing, and what people say when they leave us voicemail messages. They have my credit cards, know what I am buying, what I will have a propensity to buy, and who to suggest may be wise to advertise to me.

    Oh, I get your idea here, but Google holds a lot more information than you may be giving credit. What could be done with all of that information could become more than we are ready to comprehend.

  2. i agree. Google DOES NOT know everything. It has limitations, just like man :)

    @Mark….surely I would agree with you…

    but it’s the monolithic image of GOOGLE that I’m having troubles with….they do have — well — googels of information but as I’ve learned to see it, it is at this point, not “used” against the world’s internet users….

    tho, it really could be, I’d suppose….and if I was a SciFi type writer (like the guy who wrote that Flash Forward TV show maybe), this could be a great plot… “Google & World Domination” comes to mind as a working title…

    seriously, tho….Google as I see it IS the medium thru which all that knowledge flows….and not the knowledge itself….

  4. Interesting view on Google, Jim! It’s been awhile since I’ve heard someone quote ol’ McLuahan.

    Google’s definitely a ‘service provider’ in terms of offering information from different resources, but it’s up to us at the end of the day to make the call on what we deem as valid.

    If you think about it, I believe statements such as “Just Google it.” and “Ask Google” is just a reflection on how convenient Google is as opposed to suggesting that Google has all the answers. If I wanted to do some research on a science project, find out the best Father’s Day gift and look up where I’m meeting with my friends later, I could do it all from the same spot. :)

    @Zunaira….if you think that the number of “futurists” and “popcorn theorists” is large today, then I’d agree with you…and IMHO, many many of them from Toffler to Asmus to Frey, all get their “chops” from McLuahan….Chomsky included!

    That said, the use of the term “google” meaning of course to look something “up” has encroached on our conciousness without even noticing same….
