Breaking News: Google Instant aint’ Here!
So, what’s “Google Instant?” And what will it mean for us SEO types and our clients? Ahh…let’s look at that all, shall we?
To begin with, you’ll need to experience this yourself, so go to google.com — it’s rolled out all over the US as of right now, and start typing in a search keyword….and what happens? Yes, that’s correct, when you type and as you type, Google now tries to interpret that ‘still-to-come’ full keyword, and inserts it’s results directly below your keyword entry field. Go ahead, and give it a try….like I did. Note for me like I did (see the red circle up in the top right hand corner of my image here) you will see that it says “Instant is on,” ie an indicator. And yes, you can simply click that drop down to turn it off too, eh!
Oh, and yes, if you think that us canucks are always “behind” our American cousins, then you’re as usual, right! If you go to google.ca — we don’t as yet have the Google Instant rolled out up here — yet. It’s coming, we just don’t know when!
So what does this mean? Hmm…our thoughts are as follows…and yes, we do realize that Google has stated that this new Instant search functionality will save it’s users (like everyone on the globe, eh!) from 2 to 5 seconds per search!
First, concerning the ability of Google to “perceive” where I’m going with my search keyword is somewhat suspect, IMHO! I mean think about it…for instance, say I want to see what the serps are for “Hamilton SEO” — a geo-targeted term for my type of SEO company (or your own, eh!) and I begin to type that into the search field….go ahead, give it a try yourownself.
What do you see? Yup, what I do at google.com…as follows by each typed insert —
- Ham = I get a listing of hotels, from everywhere from North Carolina to Vancouver…all “Hampton” hotels too…
- Hamilto = I get a new listing of everything from Hamilton watches to my own city Hamilton, Ontario…
- Hamilton SE = I get listings of a type of art, I’d guess…sold it looks like all over…
- Hamilton SEO = I finally get (still incorrectly mind you) a listing of Hamilton, Seoul hotel reviews etc….
Hmm….okay, so sometimes until the search keyword term is completely filled in, you get crap. Okay, I got that.
What about then as some of our clients have sites selling products that have long tail keyword phrases….say something like “vinyl clad bow windows with casement fittings?” Well as such terms are entered, Google appears (at least so far) to be able to parse that particular phrase so that results that are more targeted than what my first example shows, look like they work. So in our mind…folks who search for long tail queries will be typing less…a good thing, I think.
Of course, this is all to be seen, as Google Instant has been live for less than 18 hours….but we’ll see…we’ll be monitoring and watching…but you should definitely give it a try….and I also wonder, how many folks will turn OFF Google Instant too…remains to be seen…but do give it a try!
Just don’t bother as yet with google.ca….us canucks appear to still come lower in the priority list of rollouts for Google, eh….sigh!Google
